bourbon review

So here is the way it’s been going. About a year ago I couldn’t get enough of Wild Turkey. Mostly because of the intense barrel flavor and the fact that it is high proof. And I like that combination. Well, so I made it a point to start traveling around the whiskey section. One of my first revelations was that this Ezra Brooks 101 proof did only two things but it did both extremely well: it was super barrel flavored and it was high proof. Plus, its only $16/bottle. Man that is one wicked combination. It is heavy on the back of the mouth the top, really oaky, but honestly, it’s super easy goin’ down. Not quite sipin’ quality but it goes down as easy as J.D. if not better. Honest. And is 101. Man I cannot get enough of this stuff. Not a huge fan of the other Ezra’s, they are okay though. I’ll grab some of the others soon and revioew them asap. Hopefully I’ll keep postin’.

For the past year, yea, its been that fucking long, I have been stuick on two bottles. Yea, only two. No, its not Jack Daniels. Its Evan Williams and Ezra Brooks. YEA, no shit. Even when I have loot to buy J.D. I buy Evan Willaims green  bottle. That shit rocks. Now, when you find yolurself in the need for high-proof booze, dude, ya gotta give Ezra Brooks 100 proof a go. Oh My. It is like, a little more musty than say Wild Turkey but its juist as good. Now, I like, I really like the oak barrel flavor in both booze and wine. Yum. More to come soon. I gotta do this stuff when  I am drinking, I think i’ll get the best honesty then. wahoo ;)

P.S. oh and crap, I think I may like “La Bala de Plata”

I haven’t said much in quite a while but I have some things on my mind. Firstly is that I had forgotten how much I love Bookers. Its been almost  ten years since I had any, well more like 8, but who is counting? But wow. Sure, its high proof butt its got such a clean finish you hardly notice. Well, maybe not you, but me anyway. There are times when it literally evaporates off your tongue. A bottle will set you back about 50 clams, but it’s well worth it.

Soon, i will be writing some about a few top shelf finds, along with some scotch and a little bit on Evan Williams, the green bottle vs the black bottle and why cheaper is better.

Well, the Whiskey Bible gives this whisky an 83 out of 100. The same as Evan Williams, and I am going to have to strongly disagree. Now certainly this could be a bad barrel. While it is otherwise a very smooth shiskey i get a flavor of, well i guess its rye but it almost seem slike its fermented or moldy rye at best. I thought, at first, that it was like tasting what an old barn board smells like, if you get my drift. Overall what hits your palette is great, its the faint and if neat very bold, old taste. I find it hard to put my finger on exactly. Yea its the flavort aht comes up through my nose and nasal passageway that kinda turns me off. It is not that I wont drink it, because I will, it just has a flavor that I find hard to appeciate. Wine Enthusiast gives it an 88, again i call crap on that. I quote “This Single Barrel Bourbon is deep amber in color, the nose is light and sweet, with traces of mango and papaya.” There is no way someone tastes mango in this. I just cannot see it at all. It is 89 proof though, that makes up for a lot.

It has been a while since I have posted anything about bourbon or whiskey in general. Well, that’ll happen. ANyway, I have been hittin’  alot of low end. Well, it used to be I would say hands down, the low end king was “R&R” and a time when I would spout, without a thought, “Jim Beam.” These days, its “Evan Willams.” Not even the green bottle, although that’s not bad, its the standard Evan. Its smooth, its not got that light, sharp taste like R&R and Jim, its more of a heavy charcoal like J.D., and it is very inexpensive. I think ‘ll start hittin’ this full time instaed of R&R when mixers are concerned. I mean sometimes we’ll shoot Jack bot mostly its R&R, cuz I am buying. That’s no more, it’s totaly Evans.

I have drank some very very bottom of the barrel whiskeys in my life. But I gotta tell you, whiskey made in the Dominican Republic takes the freaking cake. Oh my yuk! I mean, Thai rice whiskey is so so so much better than this and thats not saying much. In fact, after a few drinks, rice whiskey becomes bearable, DR whsikey does not. From a one to ten scale, this shit is a 1 at best. But hey, you can get it on ice, to go!

Oh yea, here, see some photos http://web.mac.com/kriswmurray1/iWeb/dr/

When someone asks what you are drinking and you tell them “Ancient Age,” most people immediately ask “why the fuck for?” “Price and relative flavor. For $10, it tastes fairly good. I mean, it’s a little rough on the backside of the swig but its totally smooth on the frontside. If money is tight, buy some AA. LOL. I did. Sure beats the fuck out of vodka.

The Evan Williams hits your tongue in a sort of horse-shoe configuration, leaving the front of the tongue open. The Jack Daniels is almost the exact opposite. The Jack seems to hit in the middle and the front of the tongue, not that the back is entirely taste free but it is close. Do not get me wrog, both are very very good. I guess, to me, the richness of the Daniels totally overhadows the thin taste of the Williams. I guess it isn’t the richness of the flavor isn’t the best way to describe what I am trying to describe. J.D. just has a more full flavor and hits more places on the tongue than does the E.W. To me, the full-tongue flavor is what I like the most, quite the contrary to, say, a scotch-whiskey.
So for me, it’s the JD over the EW.
